In this course the development of science/nature, mathematics and social studies concepts within the framework of integrated learning is presented. Curriculum design, short term and long term planning based on children’s interests and choices with be developed, carried out and evaluated.

Students have the opportunity to develop skills in presenting and creating curriculum and materials that support literacy development in children.

Creating play environments that meet the needs of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children will be a major focus. Students will prepare, implement and evaluate play experiences. The role of adults as facilitators of play will be emphasized.

Major theorists and their contributions to our understanding of child development are introduced, along with some common methods of study and research. Students are expected to develop skill in the careful and accurate observation of children, and in the application of the theory of child development.

A variety of personality profiles will be used to support reflection on your personal needs within a team and the needs of other team members.

This course introduces students to the fundamental elements of writing, essay writing and business writing for success in post-secondary and Early Childhood Education environments. Fundamental English writing concepts are taught at a secondary level.

Professional roles, responsibilities and ethics are explored. Issues in and identification of “quality” within a variety of ELCC settings are reviewed to support Early Learning and Child Care professionals to establish and maintain high quality child care programs.
