This course focuses on the study of the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of children from conception to age five. Major theorists and their contributions to our understanding of child development are introduced, along with some common methods of study and research. Students are expected to develop skill in the careful and accurate observation of children, and in the application of the theory of child development.

This course will concentrate on empowering the development of strategies to enable participants to set, manage and meet appropriate behaviour expectations for building and working in healthy teams. A variety of personality profiles will be used to support reflection on your personal needs within a team and the needs of other team members.

This course introduces students to the fundamental elements of writing, essay writing and business writing for success in post-secondary and Early Childhood Education environments. Fundamental English writing concepts are taught at a secondary level.

Students will examine the basics of proper health practices, fundamentals of good nutrition, and the identification of safety and health components required in a centre for young children. Professional roles, responsibilities and ethics are explored. Issues in and identification of “quality” within a variety of ELCC settings are reviewed to support Early Learning and Child Care professionals to establish and maintain high quality child care programs.
